Post Conference Site Visits

A day-long post-conference site visit activities have been planned for 13th April. The site seeing will include field visits to three different sites of water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, and faecal sludge treatment plant located in Kathmandu Valley. Interested participants are requested to register by sending an email to with a subject of "Post COnference Field Visit". Registration Fee of USD 20.00 will be required for the confirmation of booking and the registration will be done on the first come first serve basis

Site A: Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant & Melamchi Tunnel Works

The main objective of the Sundarijal Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is to treat raw water from the Melamchi River to potable standards according to the current World Health Organization Guidelines. Planning and design of the Water Treatment Plant have taken in to account for the proposed future expansion of capacity i.e. of 170 MLD in the 1st phase of the project and the other 340 MLD in 2nd phase when additional 340 MLD water will be diverted from Yangri and Larke Rivers. The ultimate capacity of the water treatment plant will be 510 MLD.

Site B: Guheswori Waste Water Treatment Plant

The Guheswori wastewater treatment plant is a biological wastewater treatment plant running since February 2002. It is based on the technology of extended aeration consisting of deep oxidation ditch of Carrousel type. The treatment plant receives wastewater generated from Gokarna, Bouddha, Jorpati, Mitrapark, Gaurighat and Pashupati area with the hydraulic capacity of 16.41 million liters of wastewater per day (190 l/s). The influent/effluent designed parameters of the treatment plant for BOD5 are 270 mg/l - 25 mg/l , COD are 1150 mg/l - 250 mg/l , and Suspended Solids are 216 mg/l – 100 mg/l.

Site C: Lubhu Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant

The Lubhu Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant has the key design features as follows; 

  • Design Capacity: 6 cum/ week
  • Prefabricated treatment modules except Planted Sludge Drying Beds and Planted Gravel Filter.
  • Constructed within 45 days in 300 sq. m  land area 
  • Gravity flow system
  • Benefits: Biogas, treated water, and compost manure
